Cowry shells have been used for many years in West Africa for the purpose of divination.
The person seeking some divine guidance will first ruminate about the question he wishes answered. Then he would throw the shells on the ground. The shells which land on the ground facing upwards will be counted. Each number of shell facing upwards corresponds to a reading or fortune.
There several types of divination methods but a common ones involve either throwing a 4 shells or 16 shells.
